Happy New Year

Dear

The beginning of the new financial year is to business minded people what January 1 is to the larger population. A new year holds enormous promise and new opportunities. Instead of new years resolutions you have new revenue targets and a new budget to live by. Most importantly, you have a new leaner team, more willing than ever before to impress the hell out of you and your customers. Or do you?

Leaving the past behind us is always a choice we can make.We can either keep on expecting bad things to happen or we can choose to be optimistic. By now, the optimistic ones amongst us would have re-defined thier market positioning, reviewed thier products and services, and investigated the best new distribution channels for the prosperous year ahead. How about your team? Are they ready to brave the new world with you?

High Yields

Energizing your team right now has to be one of the highest yielding projects you could take on. Surely you don't want to spend any more time changing the deck chairs - its time to move onwards and upwards. Its time to sell, deliver and serve. Certainly increasing the productivity of staff is going to be beneficial, but what if you could increase the underlying motivation and creative inspiration of your team. What difference would that make to your success this year?

The motivation to fully participate - is that not the holy grail of businesses today. The key to motivation is in the gaining access to intrinsic needs. Tapping into what is most important for an individual or group of individuals, and then utilizing that knowledge is one of the most important aspects of leadership development.

The more people who know how to do this in your business, the more likely it is that your business will be the most energized business in your category. Wouldn't that be worth something?

What's the Key?

In my humble opinion, and in acknowledging the newer generations now active in the workforce, the top 5 leadership skills which allow someone to understand and use intrinsic motivators are (the envelope please):

  1. Listening(without ego)
  2. Coaching
  3. Delegation
  4. Job design
  5. Values elicitation

To take up on a few key points, it's still spookily rare for people to actually listen to one another. More often than not, while listening, we are already formulating what we are going to say next. Getting off our own agenda and being completely available to another human being is a rare and highly sought after trait. Equally, coaching, delegating, designing work and uncovering anothers core needs are clumsily done apart from a small group of powerful people.

To break the mold here a little, I'm going to suggest something out of the box and that is that everybody in the business, not jut managers, be trained in these core skills. If you really want an energized business, with generation Y fully engaged, you'll have to open up the magic to everybody.

Until next time,
