Strategic Time
Success today relies on two key interrelated capabilities - Creativity and Rapid Change. Without Creativity and rapid change your business venture may evaporate from beneath you. Far too often we see fantastic ideas surface from within a business which end up getting talked down and pushed aside. Not because they are bad ideas, but because of fear of change.
Right now, your ability to be creative, encourage creativity, choose a new opportunity and implement it quickly represent your best chance of success in this ever changing economic environment. As always, business is about responding to the needs of people and society. That's why governments love you so much and offer you tax incentives to grow.
Here's the question. How much time are you setting aside for you and your business to review the validity of your products and services. Is it 10%? Is it 5%? Is it - shock horror - 0%?

The Creative Environment

If your business model does not allow time each month to review your product strategy, marketing approach or key referral relationships i'm sorry to say that you could be heading for distinction. Your financial model needs to include time to consider, time to create, and time to change.
The thing about creativity is it requires a different physical and emotional environment to logical pursuits. You need to get out of the box for out of the box ideas to form. Get away from the office, get away from home, even get away from the city. One of my clients takes a week off each year, gets away from the rest of the world and creates his year. How do you get your creative energy stimulated?
Something simple you can do to kick start your creativity. Buy a 60 page sketchbook from office works and a set of 10 Faber-Castell coloured connector pens. Take the next 2 Friday afternoons off, find yourself a bench near the beach or somewhere else that's different or out of the ordinary. Open up to the first beautiful blank page and answer the question - what's next? Better still, download the free audio recording on 8 ways to grow during a recession and answer the questions in the accompanying booklet.
The Key to Rapid Change

To implement what you need to implement everybody in the business needs to be on board. Your first priority is to enroll them. Outline your ideas and deal with any objections as if the staff were a willing prospect waiting to be convinced to buy.
Next, create a team but don't expect them all to be as excited and enthusiastic as you! Find 10% of current activities which can be dropped. These are the things you put in place 3 years ago because it was important then. If you really want rapid change, free up some resources somehow. Get creative, you will find a way.
If you want to sabotage a creative change in your business, simply layer the change on top of any already exhausted and depleted team. Better still, don't plan the change and ask everybody to just do whats necessary to make it happen! Go on, take something away that's no longer necessary and replace it with something new, exciting and vibrant.
