What is the difference in counselling and coaching?
Counselling is a process that through discussion explores past personal issues and problems and how these experiences and problems may have created paths of behaviour that can be destructive. The aim of counselling is to lead the client toward self-directed actions to resolve the deeper underlying issues that are the cause of serious problems like poor motivation, low self-esteem and poor job performance. Enabling the person to help create conditions that will cause them to understand and/or improve his behaviour, character, values or life circumstances and achieve their goals.
Coaching is about action and results, it is a partnership, where you and the coach push forward quickly to find your true professional potential. Coaching programmes are generally more concerned with the practical issues of setting goals and achieving results within specific time-scales taking a holistic approach to personal development with the ability to focus on the core skills an employee needs to perform in their role and deliver dramatic results for their business. Coaching programmes are tailored specifically to the individual, their knowledge, experience, maturity and ambitions, are flexible, adaptive ‘just-in-time' and is generally focused on achieving a number of objectives for both the individual and the company.
At one time coaching was reserved for senior managers and company executives, but now it should be a tool for everyone, providing key employees with support through all aspects of their life and all organisational changes.
